Winter light installation

THE SPACE
In the heart of Amsterdam, tucked within the
narrow shopping streets of De 9 Straatjes, De Kaaskamer has specialised in cheeses from
around the world for almost three decades.

In the winter of 2025, we collaborated with the shop to design its seasonal window display. The starting point was a simple reflection: what does the Dutch winter offer to those moving through its streets Beyond the cold and the grey skies lies a search for warmth, light and moments of comfort.
Our design response was an installation that consists of glowing lanterns, inspired by the different cheese wheels found inside the shop.

THE CONCEPT
The installation features sixteen faux stained glass lanterns, arranged in a grid that activates through gentle, shifting sequences of light. Against the grey winter days in Amsterdam, the display casts a warm glow onto the street.
The soft oscillation of the lanterns recalls the flicker of candlelight or the glow of festive lights hanging from Christmas trees, bringing a sense of warmth and wonder to the streetscape.

TECHNICAL
The challenge was combining our unique, custom-made shapes with off-the-shelf parts to keep project costs in check. Maintaining precision was key, as well as designing the workflow to be reliably repeatable for all sixteen lanterns.

Assembled from 708 individual pieces of lasercut acrylic, the lanterns have been kept lightweight and portable, integrating seamlessly with the steel wires, electronics and lighting fixtures.
Designed for assembly and made to be reused, the installation is non-destructive and can be easily repaired, moved or reassembled.
